Haydée Santamaría is one of two women who joined Fidel Castro in the armed attack against the Moncada Barracks that sparked the Cuban Revolution. During this heroic struggle, she was arrested, tortured, and lost many loved ones, but she continued as a leader of the July 26 movement against the Batista dictatorship. With the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Santamaría became the founding director of the world-renowned cultural institution Casa de las Americas.
